IMD warns of heavy rainfall in 10 states; Orange alert for Chennai

The India Meteorological Department on Tuesday warned of heavy rainfall in ten states till October 16. It also said that extreme showers are very likely in South Peninsular India. The weather department has issued an orange alert for Chennai and its neighboring districts: Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, and Tiruvallur. It will rain between 6 cm and 20 cm on October 15.

Similarly, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, and Mayiladuthurai may also receive good rainfall. The heavy rain is likely to be most intense in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet.

Following the forecast of very heavy rains, the Tamil Nadu government implemented an integrated command for seamless coordination among various departments. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin released a 24×7 helpline, ‘1913’, and called upon the people to download TN ALERT – an app that provides real-time rain alerts and information on inundation.

Government officials are taking all safety measures as some places may receive over 20 centimeters of rain. Around 150 workers will operate the helpline, and information related to rain will also be shared on social media platforms.

Relief camps have been provided against flood relief at all places in Chennai, besides arranging 13,000 volunteers and 100 motor pumps. The stormwater drainage system is almost completed in most places, besides installing 356 pumping stations with backup generators. Super sucker and jet rodding machines were kept ready to handle the aftermath of the flood situation that may arise.

On the other hand, Delhi will have clear skies until October 16th, with mercury at 35°C. The AQI in the national capital currently stands at 114, which is recorded as ‘moderate.’ As per the Central Pollution Control Board, the AQI in Mumbai stands at 57, which falls in the category of ‘satisfactory.’
