In a 36-year-old case, gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was given a life sentence.

A big setback to the notorious criminal cum politician Mukhtar Ansari who has finally been sentenced to life imprisonment by the district court of the holy town of Varanasi (Banaras) for getting fraudulent firearms licenses 36 years ago.

Ansari, who had been sent to this prison facility many times and produced through video-conferencing, finally got judged under the serious sections of forgery and criminal conspiracy.

The case, which dates back to 1987 when Ansari had applied for a double-barrel gun license by forging signatures of top officials, is an example of illegal conduct. Revealing the offence, the police case started filing an FIR in 1990.

In the end, considering a long period and the trial, which included 10 of the witnesses’ voices telling their stories, the court declared Ansari guilty.

However, in this long-standing case of 3 decades involving one of the dreaded dons with political ambitions, such a crucial blunder of losing one life ultimately occurred. In addition to that, justice was eventually able to prevail.

Serving multiple life terms in prison, Ansari has very little power as compared to when he was free. This keeps him away from criminal activities, which can rehabilitate him.

The verdict has effectively set a benchmark in these cases, but it remains to be seen whether other similar crimes against gangsters and politicians will finally be dealt with at the same speed as the case in question.
