India conducts military drills over Andamans, airspace closed

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has declared that civilian planes would be prohibited from flying above the airspace after India intends to carry out drills and weapon tests in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal for two days.

The airspace above a region around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will be shut down for three hours on Saturday and Sunday to execute scheduled military exercises and weapon tests.

A Notam (Notice to Airmen) declared that civilian planes would be prohibited from flying over the airspace after India announced plans to carry out drills and arms tests within the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal for two days.

Hence, flights arriving at and departing from Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru will be 15-20 minutes longer in length on May 24 and 25 between 7 am and 10 am.

The NOTAM states that airspace limitations would be imposed over a polygonic region around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the longest corridor being 500 kilometres.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the nation’s foes have learned what happens when ‘sindoor’ turns into gunpowder, and praised India’s military for setting such a trap that Pakistan had to go down on its knees.

In his maiden public address in Rajasthan after Operation Sindoor, initiated in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, the prime minister targeted Pakistan and in retaliation against the April 22 attack stated that “we destroyed nine biggest terror hideouts in 22 minutes”.

The world and the country’s enemies have witnessed what follows when ‘sindoor’ becomes ‘blood’ (gunpowder),” he remarked during the public meeting in Palana in Bikaner, which borders Pakistan.
