India Halts Train services with Bangladesh Amid political unrest

Tensions in Bangladesh extend to India as all train services were halted on Monday after Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina went into hiding, ending a volatile few days of protest that swept the country.

MV Maitri Express, which operates daily from Kolkata to Dhaka and vice versa and has been suspended for the last 15 days due to the festive season, will remain suspended. Likewise, the operation of the Bandhan Express that connects Kolkata with Khulna and runs two days a week has also come to a halt indefintely.

Bangladesh protests that were initially students’ demonstrations against the government policy of selection of employees in July ended Monday with the prime minister fleeing the country and the military stating it will institute an interim government.

The Research Institute puts the death toll at more than 300 in over a month of riots that marked the end of the autocratic rule of 76-year-old PM Sheikh Hasina.

Cheering people had brandished banners waving, some even dancing on the turret of a tank in the city’s morning on Monday before several hundred rampaged through the gates of Hasina.
