India intervenes on Guru Granth Sahib issue with Qatar, saroop returned

As soon as the SGPC raises concern, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal says that arrangements are being made to get the second saroop released in Doha.

It can be recalled that on Wednesday, the SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami pointed out that two copies of Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book, were seized in Doha.

Now on Friday, the ministry of external affairs (MEA) stated that India has taken up the matter with the Qatari authorities and is committed to ensuring that the remaining two copies are returned with respect.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on X: “There have been reports of Guru Granth Sahib copies that have been confiscated by the Qatari authorities, and the request by the Sikh community to release the same into the public domain:

The government has already taken up this matter with the counterpart in Qatar, and the Indian embassy has provided updates to the Sikh community in Doha about the situation on this matter.

Jaiswal said that one of the copies of Guru Granth Sahib has already been recovered, and the efforts are being made to backtrack the second one.

On Thursday, SGPC president Dhami had sought external affairs minister S Jaishankar and the Indian ambassador to Qatar for the release of the two holy’saroops’ of Guru Granth Sahib that have been confiscated by the police in Doha.

Enduring that the’saroops’ are kept at the police station is utterly intolerable, irrespective of the smell of modernity. It was taken up by Bhai Kanhaiya Humanitarian Aid recently to the Akal Takht Jathedar, after which the SGPC took up the matter, said Dhami.
