India monitors Bangladesh unrest; 19,000 Indians affected

Due to the unrest that ensued in Neighboring Bangladesh, the external affairs minister S Jaishankar addressed the lower house, the Lok Sabha, in India, detailing the safety of the Indian people in Bangladesh.

The Indian Foreign Minister also said that there are about 19,000 Indians in Bangladesh at the moment, and of them, only about 9,000 are students. He further told the parliament that most of them had returned to India in July when the Bangladesh trouble escalated to acts of hostility.

Regarding Indians living in Bangladesh, we have ‘‘day-to-day communication with the Indian community regarding our missions in Bangladesh,” Jaishankar said, ensuring the House of another commitment of the government.

The foreign minister also agreed with Indian concern about the situation of minorities, mainly in Bangladesh, and mentioned that the government was closely watching it. They would note other groups and organisations taking measures to safeguard and protect them. ‘Of course, we will continue to be very concerned until there is stability of order,’ he said.

MB, taking a view of the recent developments, stated that the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Mrs. Sheikh Hasina, wanted to visit India at the eleventh hour of the crisis. There are rumors to the effect that after a meeting with the leaders of the security establishment on the day of the demonstration, on the night of August 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina must have decided to resign.

At very short notice, she sought permission to come to India temporarily. We received a request for flight clearance from the Bangladeshi authorities at very short notice; she arrived in Delhi the previous evening.

Another paramilitary force of the Indian territory, the Border Security Force (BSF), has also raised an alert on the Indo-Bangladesh border areas to meet with the local head of at least one village and military ranks required to maintain the law and order situation in the border area.

Since the situation in Bangladesh is rather unstable, the Indian government pays much attention to it and provides necessary actions to protect the lives and health of people.
