India welcomes Israel-Hamas ceasefire for Gaza assistance

A ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas was reached to end the war in Gaza and release hostages held captive by Hamas. India has welcomed the development in the Middle East.

India welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. It expressed hope that the latest development would lead to a “safe and sustained supply of humanitarian assistance\” to the people of Gaza, where over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in the 15-month-long war.

“We welcome the announcement of the agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza. We hope this will lead to a safe and sustained supply of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. We have consistently called for the release of all hostages, ceasefire, and return to a path of dialogue and diplomacy,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

The United States and Qatar announced the deal after months of negotiations led by Egyptian and Qatari mediators backed by the US.

The development comes days before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who has repeatedly warned Hamas that it will have “hell to pay” if hostages are not released before he takes over the office on January 20.
