Indian government blocks 18 OTT platforms for obscene content

Over 18 platforms that disseminate obscene and pornographic material all over TV have been charged with breaking the law after realizing that they violated the earlier warning issued by the Indian administration. On the one hand, the common resources include the accounts on the website, app, and social media from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. They consist of 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media.

The course of action involves banning these platforms due to the constant instructions issued against promoting obscenity, vulgarity, and abuse as a method of creative expression. This step aligns with the provisions of the Information Technology Act of 2000.

Some of the restricted platforms include Dreams Films, Voovi, Yessma, Uncut Add, Trik Flix, X-Prime, Besharams, Hunters, Rabbit, Xtramood, Nuefliks, Moodx, Mojflix, and Hot Shots. VIP, Fugi, Chikooflix, and Mood Prime are offered in packages.

From the government’s speech, it is clear that the content circulated on social media platforms this year is mostly made to humiliate and belittle women. It stressed the scenes having nudity, sexual acts, improper use of teachers and students, family ties like incest, etc. The material had sexual innuendos in addition to scenes that featured naked women in various stances with no apparent content attachment or social meaning.

The administration advanced the assertion that the Month OTT app alone had been downloaded by over 10 million and the two others by over 5 million. These platforms were part of the strategies involving various social media accounts that had a collective number of followers of over 3.2 million.

The government found that they mainly resorted to social media as a tool for promotion. Throughout the year, there will be many trailers and links to external materials that should prompt you to go to their websites or apps to watch their movies and TV shows.

This state move is no exception; this obligation reminds everyone of the huge issue of responsible content distribution and learning the whole process of protecting viewers from inappropriate material. This helps the government to lead the regulation of the digital space and care about the country`s people.
