Indian leaders seek opposition consensus on Lok Sabha speaker pick

According to the information available, the BJP leaders have contacted Congress president Mallikarjun Charge, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav, DMK’s MK Stalin, and TMC chief Mama Banerjee.
New Delhi:
With an aim to garner support for the decisions that are set to be made in this regard politically, both defense minister Rajnath Singh and parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Reijo have been put forward to seek consensus on the contenders for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker as well as Deputy Speaker, sources suggest.

It can be said that the senior BJP leaders included in the list are those who have extended their conveyance on this subject to some of the top opposition leaders, such as Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress Party, Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, MK Stalin of the DMK Party, and Mama Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress Party.

The discussions are also initiated with other important NDA partners, like the Telugu Desam Party and Janata Dal United, according to sources.

Those who wish to contest the poll for the speakership are required to file their nomination before noon today, and, in the event of a contest, the election for the post will be conducted tomorrow. Four of the Speakers so far have been chosen by a unanimous vote, and an election will therefore be the first should it take place.

The BJP is rather reserved on the decision regarding the post, while rumors are that eventually Om Birla, who was the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha, might be appointed again. In fact, so much of this change has started being attributed to the two, and the pro-term speaker Bhattrai Mahlab is also being considered a front-liner.

Thus, the position of Deputy Speaker is another post on which focus is placed. This position is normally expected of the opposition. But the BJP government at the center had earlier inducted the Alloyed Indian of African Origin—AIADMK’s M Thembi Drai—as the Deputy Speaker in 2014. Unfortunately, the post has been without an incumbent since 2019.

Post a comment. Such was the scenario during the 16th and 17th Lok Sabha’s, when Congress did not have adequate numbers in the house to claim a Leader of the Opposite
