Indian Railways extends subsidy of ₹56,993 crore every year to all categories of passengers by providing a hefty rebate of as high as 46 per cent in every ticket, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday. The Minister was responding to questions in the Lok Sabha on when the discounts to different passenger categories would be restored.

For a ₹100-ticket, the passenger pays only ₹54. That’s the subsidy. A total of ₹56,993 crore subsidy is given every year by the Indian Railways to all classes of passengers,” the Minister replied during the Question Hour.
