Indian Railways extends subsidy of ₹56,993 crore every year to all categories of passengers by providing a hefty rebate of as high as 46 per cent in every ticket, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday. The Minister was responding to questions in the Lok Sabha on when the discounts to different passenger categories would be restored.
For a ₹100-ticket, the passenger pays only ₹54. That’s the subsidy. A total of ₹56,993 crore subsidy is given every year by the Indian Railways to all classes of passengers,” the Minister replied during the Question Hour.
In response to questions on the rapid train service, Vaishnaw spoke of the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail service between Bhuj and Ahmedabad. He said that passenger satisfaction is very high because of the quality of service.
Officials said the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail has increased intercity connectivity and will cover the 359-kilometer distance between Bhuj and Ahmedabad in a record 5 hours and 45 minutes, including stops at various stations en route.
