India’s T20I transition: A new era dawns after Veteran retirements

While India has every reason to cheer for their T20 World Cup victory, a generation change has hit the national team. Only 11 minutes after India won their first ICC trophy in 11 years against South Africa in the final, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from the format.

The BCCI president Jay Shah, also had words of acknowledgment for the outgoing captains, crediting the series victory that led India to the T20I title of the 2023 T20 World Cup, which is the tournament that has been the first global achievement of the Indian team since the victorious campaign for the on the 2011 ODI World Cup.

“If you see in other teams, experience pays off; from Rohit Sharma to Virat Kohli, whoever batted did well. Experience is a big thing in cricket, especially in World Cups. You cannot experiment that much,” Shah said on Monday, as quoted by ANI.

Shah hopes for a World Test Championship and Champions Trophy success next year before the seniors are dropped from the fifty-over and Twenty20 teams.

Similarly, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy, so the way this team is progressing what will be, I can assure you there will be a similar squad playing there; the seniors will be there.

The attention is now on India’s T20I team captain, and after the Asia Cup, it appears that Hardik Pandya will be considered the new captain instead of Rohit Sharma. Shah, however, having the last word regarding selection, commended Hardik’s captaincy while Rohit was IPL-bound.

Regarding captaincy, he said,” I don’t want to preempt the selectors, but the Captaincy issue will be resolved once I talk to selectors, and we will suitably announce it”.

With the new generation of Indian cricket waiting to usher in the new era, the nation is waiting to see the new set of leaders in T20I replacing Kohli Rohit and Jadeja.
