Industrialist murdered by grandson over property dispute

In a gruesome incident, an 86-year-old industrialist was hacked to death by his grandson over property dispute in the city on Saturday night, the police said on Sunday. Chairman and managing director of the Veljan Group, V.C. Janardhan Rao sustained multiple stab wounds.

The tragic event unfolded on February night 6th when the victim, K. Kirti Teja, 28 years old, allegedly attacked his grandfather with a knife, forcing Rao to breathe his last then and there. Teja continued stabbing even his mother after she interfered in the incident. She later received injuries that sent her into a hospital.

Teja and his mother living elsewhere in the city had gone to Rao’s residence in Somajiguda on Thursday. A heated argument ensued when she went aside to get coffee amidst discussions over the sharing of Rao’s property, sources said.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Teja accused his grandfather of keeping him neglected, besides refusing to share the assets of the family. Police also said that accused had been telling that he is being overlooked from his childhood continuously.

The police are investigating the reports that came out about that the victim had been stabbed above 70 times, although the police confirmed more than one stabbing and added, the exact would be ascertained after post-mortem.

Teja, who returned to Hyderabad only recently after a master’s programme in the US, was arrested on Saturday in connection with the murder. Further investigation is under way. Established in 1965, Veljan Group specializes in the provision of turnkey solutions spanning shipbuilding, energy and industrial applications, the company’s website says.
