Investigation continues in Kolkata Doctor’s murder case

The father of a doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata spoke of his concern about there being a massive unaccounted duration of her shift. He said no one tried to reach her while she was on duty for the seven hours.

In his testimony, he said his daughter went to work at around 8:10 in the morning, and the last time she spoke with his wife was at about 11:15 in the evening. He said:

‘’When my wife called her in the morning, the phone rang, but no one answered it, and at that time, my daughter had already died”.

One of the issues that the father raises is that being a doctor on call, his wife did not attend to any patient from 3 in the morning till 10 in the morning. My daughter is no longer alive, but many have come out to stand with me; she faced some tough times in college, and now the entire department is under a black mark. He said I was among those protesting, and I had even talked with CBI.

The aggrieved parents told CBI that they have reason to believe that a few interns and some of the physicians of the hospital are involved in their daughter’s murder. They have supplied the names of the persons of interest to the central agency, which is now probing the issue under the direction of the Calcutta High Court.

The CBI is concentrating on interrogating these people and the Kolkata Police officers who were the first to investigate the case. Later this week, the agency interviewed a house staff member and two postgraduate trainees who were on the same shift as the doctor during the event.

Also, the former hospital principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, was taken for interrogations; the official resigned only 48 hours after the body was found in the mortuary, and the man had claimed that some people threatened his life. Thus, his lawyer had sought anticipatory bail from Calcutta High Court for him.

During the further course of the investigation, CBI officials conducted a mock crime scene reconstruction and 3D tracking in the seminar hall of the hospital in which the body of the victim was discovered on 9th August. The next day, a civic volunteer was apprehended for questioning in connection with the case.
