Ms Rao was detained by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Monday after her arrival from Dubai on an Emirates flight; they recovered 14.8kg of gold with her.
Bengaluru: The top cop whose daughter – Ranya Rao – was taken into custody at Bengaluru airport last night, after authorities found 14.8kg of gold on her, has been left “shocked and devastated” by the news, and has also attempted to distance himself from the whole debacle.
“The law will do its job. There is no black mark on my career,” he said in a statement to news agency ANI. Ramachandra Rao, Director-General of Police (Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation), too remarked, “Like any father, I was shocked and disappointed when it came to my attention through the media. I didn’t know any of these things. I don’t want to comment further.”
“She is not staying with us. She is staying separately with her husband. There must be some issue between them. (perhaps) due to some domestic issues,” the top cop said. Ranya Rao is Mr Rao’s stepdaughter. The senior police officer’s first wife re-married after his first wife passed away. His second wife has two daughters from her previous marriage, of whom Ms Rao is one.
Ranya Rao was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Monday when she arrived from Dubai on an Emirates flight. Authorities said the arresting officials found her attempting to bring gold into the nation by wearing a considerable amount and hiding the remaining ones in her clothes.
