Karnataka’s Pro-Pakistan slogan controversy: political arrests escalate tensions

Karnataka saw a political uproar over arrests linked to purportedly pro-Pakistani chanting. First, on Tuesday, BJP worker Ravi was taken into custody by the Mandya district police. They responded when a video from December 2022 seemed to capture Ravi yelling “Pakistan Zindabad” during a demonstration against the comments made by Pakistan’s former foreign minister about Prime Minister Modi. This arrest occurred the day after the authorities detained three Congress workers for yelling identical slogans on February 27 at the Vidhana Soudha.

Indresh N S, the head of the BJP’s Mandya district unit, claimed that the arrest resulted from political vengeance.

“The police have now filed a complaint and taken him into custody after the event over a year and a half ago. Ravi is a farmer with a Kannada-only education.

He raised Zindabad for Pakistan while puzzled while raising slogans. When we were protesting against Pakistan, why would he chant pro-Pakistan slogans? Said Indresh.

“They attacked the BJP workers without any justification the moment they questioned the Congress’s commitment over the pro-Pakistan slogans that were raised in the Vidhana Soudha,” he continued. Congressmen are placed under judicial custody.

On Tuesday, a judge ordered the three Congress workers who had been detained on suspicion of shouting pro-Pakistani chants in the Vidhana Soudha on February 27 to be placed under judicial detention.

On Monday, the police took three people into custody: Munnawar, a resident of Bengaluru’s RT Nagar; Mohammad Nashipudi, a local of Byadgi village in the Haveri district; and Iltaz, a native of Delhi.

On Tuesday, G Parameshwara, the home minister, stated that there had been two instances of pro-Pakistan chants.

“Even though the forensic science laboratory report was ambiguous, we identified the suspects and took them into custody using the information, lip movement, and analysis. The law will work itself out, he declared.
