Early trends indicate a strong BJP lead in Haryana, but AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal said on Tuesday that electoral contests require humility. Addressing a congregation of AAP municipal councilors here, Kejriwal said the “biggest lesson” from the poll results is to avoid overconfidence during elections.
The BJP is set to comfortably capture the state, leading in 50 out of the 90 assembly seats. Kejriwal added, “Let us see what the results are in Haryana. The biggest lesson is that one should never be overconfident in elections.” He underlined that no election must be considered lightweight, referring to each contest and seat as tough.
The AAP announced contesting independently in Haryana following a failure to stitch a pre-poll alliance with the Congress, mainly over issues of seat distribution. The party contested 89 of the 90 seats, as the Congress rejected its demand for nine seats. As the results trickled in, AAP candidates trailed behind their BJP and Congress rivals in almost all constituencies.
During his campaign, the AAP chief claimed that no government could be formed in Haryana without the AAP’s involvement. Kejriwal asked party councilors to concentrate on next year’s Delhi Assembly elections, due in February, while emphasizing that waste management in their wards has to be effective.
“You will play a very important role in this election. We will win if you ensure proper collection and disposal of garbage in your areas, which is fundamental,” he reiterated, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that efforts start from the grassroots level.
