There was a strange incident in which some excise officers at Adimali in Kerala had school students coming to their office searching for a matchbox to light a beedi they had rolled with ganja. The incident occurred on Monday during an excursion by students from an aided school in Thrissur.
The students, mistaking that the local excise office was a workshop, approached officers for the matchbox. However, the excise officials caught the higher secondary students in the act and seized banned substances, including ganja, hashish oil, and items for rolling out contraband.
A case has been registered against two minor students found in possession of the banned substances. After having food from a nearby hotel, the youths came out to smoke ganja beedi and asked for a matchbox to light it.
The students mistook the rear portion of the office as a workshop and asked for the matchbox. Upon seeing the officers, they tried to run away and were arrested. A check later showed the presence of banned substances,” said a senior excise officer.
Legal action has been started against the two students from whom the drugs were confiscated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. All the implicated students had been given counseling, while the rest were sent back to school accompanied by their teachers, while the two minors left with their parents, who were summoned to take them home.
According to authorities, drug abuse has become a grave issue even during school and college tours within the state. In this case, students reportedly collected money and bought the substances from local peddlers. Based on the evidence, the department initiated legal action against the students.
