Kerala teen alleges abuse by 64 individuals over five years

An 18-year-old girl in Kerala complained of sexual abuse by 64 persons in the last five years. The Pathanamthitta police registered a case based on the revelation of the girl during a counseling session provided by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

The incident came to light when a team of Mahila Samakya NGO, during their outreach programme, visited the girl’s house. The NGO, after listening to her horrific experience, immediately informed the CWC in Pathanamthitta district.

In further counseling, the girl revealed that when she was 13 years old, a neighbor abused her by showing her pornographic material. When 18, she said she had been continued to be exploited, including abuses during training sessions in sports. She said some private videos of her were also circulated, adding to her trauma.

The police have detained more than ten suspects during the continuing investigations. A detailed statement will also be recorded from the girl for supporting the investigation.

N Rajeev, chairperson of the CWC in Pathanamthitta, said the case was grave as the girl had been abused since her Class 8. He said the committee would ensure all care and protection for her. “The gravity of the case is serious. She was active in sports and allegedly faced abuse in public places as well,” Rajeev said.
