Warisputra Singh, the chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ and a famous Khalistani separatist leader, has his nomination accepted by the Election Commission of India. He will now contest independently from the Punjab Lok Sabha seat in Amritsar. Nevertheless, Singh, currently in Dibrugarh jail, Assam, is under severe charges, including the National Security Act (NSA).
Singh was detained in April last year by the Punjab Police in Moga, Punjab, after the police had been chasing him for weeks. Notably, Singh gained notoriety in February of the same year when his supporters surrounded the Ajnala police station in Amritsar and successfully released Lovepreet Toofan, a close associate of Singh, who had been arrested on a kidnapping and assault case.
The government reports have long presented Amritpal Singh as a prominent person in the Punjab Khalistani-Pakistan activities in Punjab. He is suspected of having connections with armed people and is claimed to have been given weapons by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s intelligence agency. Apart from that, the intelligence agencies also say that his actions are geared to cause communal tension and division in Punjab since he is promoting a “gun culture” among the young people.
