Kolkata cops face deadline to crack brutal rape-murder case

What has come as a surprise, the Kolkata Police have been threatened with a deadline up to this Sunday to apprehend all the perpetrators involved in the gruesome attack and rape of a 31-year-old doctor at the RG Kar Medical College last week. If this is not done, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has threatened that the case would be referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The deadline has been set against the backdrop of increasing political pressure on the Pinarayi Vijayan Ministry smelling ‘NH 17 murder ‘ plot from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP), which is very vocal over the demand for a categorical inquiry into the incident. Banerjee, who has previously described the Kolkata Police as ‘the best in the world,’ said that the state government will ‘scrupulously’ give the case to the CBI ‘even though their success rate is low. ’

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal has dispelled the notion that the police are not very proactive in the case. The police are exerting maximum efforts to solve the case and are optimistic that they will nab the rest of the culprits in the next four to five days. The police have also opened a telephone line whereby doctors can call in and offer information about the case anonymously.

Sensitization, violence: Doctors of all the hospitals in the country have joined an indefinite strike to demand security for themselves and others. There is also a dearth of such events as ‘Principal’ in RG Kar Medical College, where its Principal, Dr Sandip Ghosh, stepped down recently as the nuisance blamed the victim.

The first postmortem shows that the deceased woman, a young, promising doctor, had several injuries consisting of: She had mouth bleeding and blood coming out of her eyes and her private part; her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips were scarified.

This has sparked political controversy. The BJP has pointed out the apathy of the state government, and the TMC government in West Bengal has risen in defense of the police. Beneath it, the nation is holding its breath, waiting for the truth to unfold and for the culprits to be apprehended.
