A young unmarried woman, a 31-year-old doctor, was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Bengal, and the family accused the college authorities of attempting to hush up the matter.
The victim’s father said that the Assistant Superintendent of the chest medicine department called him to say that his daughter had committed suicide. But when the family arrived at the hospital grounds, they saw the bruised and half-naked doctor sprawled across a seminar table.
It was much later that the police investigation established that the doctor had been raped and killed in a brutal fashion. The family has accused the college authorities of seeking to hush the matter as the person who made the call did not introduce himself.
Sanjoy Roy, a human rights activist and a volunteer of the inhabitants of the area, has been arrested, and the police have stated that they may arrest more persons of interest. The top management of the college has also been questioned, and the Assistant Superintendent of the college, as well as the Head of the Chest Medicine department of the college, has been questioned on the first report of suicide being made.
The victim’s family has pledged to pursue the perpetrators of the crime, and there have been suggestions that insiders could have been involved. The state government has said that the police must complete the investigation by Sunday and warned that the CBI will be called to investigate the case if it is not done.
The unfortunate event has repeatedly awakened the call for improving measures to enhance the protection of health workers.
