Kolkata doctor’s rape-murder: nationwide protests and CBI investigation

Indian Medical Association (IMA) held a nationwide strike against the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata except for emergency services. In an open letter, IMA blamed authorities for failing to ensure doctors’ safety.

Former principal of RG Kar Medical College Dr. Sandip Ghosh appeared before CBI for the second day of questioning in the case.

Union Health Ministry assured protesting doctors of constituting a committee to strengthen safety measures for healthcare professionals. It appealed to doctors to resume duties given rising cases of diseases.

Bollywood actor R. Madhavan expressed outrage at the brutal incident, questioning the need for harsh steps if Nirbhaya’s case failed to instill fear in perpetrators.

NCW alleged sudden renovations at the crime scene site may have led to evidence tampering.

In Karnataka, over 1,000 doctors protested at the IMA office. The Health Minister assured meeting stakeholders to discuss laws and protocols for staff safety.

The Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said the incident raised serious security concerns for medical staff and society. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla hit out at TMC, alleging failure to deliver justice and protect victims.

A doctor in Gujarat was booked for brandishing a licensed gun during a protest against the incident.
