In his terrifying police testimony, the accused disclosed that he had initially agreed with his wife, brother, and brother’s wife to commit suicide in response to the crippling debt. The killings were a consequence of the suicidal plan gone wrong.
The Kolkata Police might have solved the enigma regarding the intricate case of triple murders and suspected attempted suicides which shocked the city last month. Three family members were discovered dead in their residence in Tangra, which lies on the outskirts of Kolkata, on February 19. The incident became public when two brothers and one of their father’s sons crashed their car against a pillar, reportedly trying to commit suicide. Upon being interrogated by the police, they revealed about the dead bodies at home.
Now, one of the brothers, Prasun Dey, has owned up to murdering all three – wife Romi Dey, their 14-year-old daughter and sister-in-law Sudeshna Dey. During his interrogation, it was found that a Rs 16 crore debt might have caused the killings. The brothers, Pranay and Prasun Dey, shared the Tangra house with their wives. Pranay Dey’s son and Prasun Dey’s daughter were the other residents of the house.
In his gruesome testimony to the police, Mr Dey, a businessman, disclosed that he had initially agreed with his wife, brother and brother’s wife to commit suicide over the humongous debt. The killings were a consequence of the botched suicide attempt.
On Feb 17, the six-member family had ‘payesh’ (rice pudding) laced with sleeping pills. But all of them woke up the following day alive. It was then that the brothers and their wives proceeded with their Plan B. They planned to assist each other in ending their lives, he informed the police. Their children somehow had no clue about the controversial plan, according to police.
While being questioned, Prasun Dey also alleged under questioning that he initially used a pillow to suffocate his daughter while his wife helped him in doing so by restraining her feet. His wife Romi then slit her wrists afterwards. But since that also failed, he slit her wrists and her throat, police stated, adding he subsequently also murdered his sister-in-law in the same manner.
