Landmark parliamentary session as 18th Lok Sabha convenes

Stand set for a busy parliamentary session. The 18th Lok Sabha and the 264th Rajya Sabha are slated to begin in the forthcoming days.

The first sitting of the new 18th Lok Sabha will be from June 24 to July 3, with session timings extending through the period, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday. In this particular session, the members of the lower house who were recently elected will be swearing an oath or affirming their position, and the other important segment in choosing the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Notably, President Droupadi Murmu will present a joint sitting of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on June 27, where she will likely give a speech on the new government’s program for the coming five years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expected to present his council of ministers to the Parliament after the President’s address the same day.

The 264thhouse of the Rajya Sabha will also commence on June 27 and continue until July 3, 2014, and like the Lok Sabha, would be a parallel session.

The significance of this parliamentary session is that it will be the first session of the Parliament following the Lok Sabha 2024 Elections, wherein the BJP came back into power, albeit losing some of their seats by winning 240 seats in total. Coming to the opposition INDIA bloc, which has 232 seats, these are the Parties, which include the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Party.

The opposition will likely try to” corner” the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government when parliament takes up the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address. This debate will be followed by an active response from the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

With the power change looming, the increment in the presence of the opposition, and the prospective parliamentary session, people are in for the exciting and heated political display that will define the next few years of the nation’s course.
