Landslide destroys Teesta dam power station in Sikkim

The Stage 5 dam has remained inactive since the Lhonak glacial lake breach after the cloudburst in Sikkim in October 2023.
Guwahati:

NHPC’s Teesta Stage 5 dam at Sikkim’s Dikchu was hit by a massive landslide today around the morning hours, which led to the destruction of the power station of the hydroelectricity department.

The problem apparently concerned a hill next to the plant housing the 510 MW power station; the hill was reported to be in danger of minor slips in the past few weeks. A major part of the hill moved on Tuesday morning and covered the power station site with debris.

There were no losses or deaths in the catastrophe, as the power station has been abandoned for the past few days in light of recurrent soil slips. Some of the bits cut from videos taken near the power station show part of the cliff moving, and then, people gasping, a large part of the cliff collapses on the power station.

The last dam of the series, namely the Stage 5 dam, has been non-operational ever since the Lhonak glacial lake breach in Sikkim cloudburst in October 2023.

This caused a flash flood and eroded part of the Teesta Dam at Chungthang, which is the integrated hydropower project in Sikkim.

Post a comment. Videos revealed that vast chunks of the wall of the dam were absent as the water of the Teesta was passing through it unhampered at Mangan in North Sikkin.
