Lawyer accuses West Bengal Government of witness tampering

Lawyer Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, who is defending the case of the parents of the rape and murder victim at RG Kar hospital, complains about the political pressure by the West Bengal government and attempts to suborn the witness. He aimed a verbal attack at West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of trivializing crime against women by giving money to families of the victims.

On the social side, the stand of the CM of West Bengal is highly objectionable. The moment she says rape, she first rings up the family of the victim, offers Rs 1. 5 lakh, and advises them it’s best to leave it at that. The lawyer also said that efforts were made to influence the witnesses in this case, something he said the Chief Minister had done. ‘The government tried to bribe witnesses here as well,’ he said, adding that the victim’s parents, after rejecting these offers, refused to play the ‘game’ of the Chief Minister.

The recent past, the victim’s father simply turned down any form of compensation as he opined that his daughter would not have desired any form of compensation and would feel uncomfortable. ‘We have been given the authority to move this issue to court, which is what we did. The case has been handed over to CBI, and now they have to present their report before the Court,’ the lawyer said.

Continuing his criticism of Kolkata police, Bhattacharya said: It was not proper for the police commissioner to hold press conferences. Obviously, he failed to handle the situation, and police action after the incident is still disappointing.

There has been a tragic case of rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor who was attacked and killed while resting in the seminar hall of RG Kar medical college hospital after being put on duty for 36 hours continuously. She was discovered in the morning and suffocated to death after being brutally taken through a nice torture test.

The CBI is investigating the case in which it had earlier taken into custody a civic volunteer in his late thirties named Sanjoy Roy. On the same note, different investigators are still grilling the former medical college principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, over the three-hour delay that the victim’s parents were given before they were allowed to view their dead mutilated daughter.
