Looters return stolen Items from Bangladesh PM’s house amid unrest

The students mainly involved in the protest demanding her removal have now started a new generation campaign of ‘the recovery of the looted items and return of Ganabhaban to its past state.’

Last week, the Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India, and there were pictures and videos of people carrying different items they stole from the prime minister’s residence—laptops, furniture, branded handbags and shoes, saris, even a live duck and fish.

Those mainly students who had earlier called for her removal have now launched a ‘recovery the looted items’ campaign and repaired Ganabhaban, or the People’s House, the residence of the Bangladesh Prime Minister.

They initially made calls through social media to the public to return the items.

Some of them responded to their appeals. Some students returned with chairs, sofas, refrigerators, Apple iMacs, MacBooks, iPhones, gym equipment, tables, an electric guitar, pigeons, and a cat.

One man said that he had stolen a duck and had consumed it, and to make amends, he was forced to produce money.

An autorickshaw driver who was paid Bangladeshi Taka 1 lakh (about Rs 74, 000) from the drawers of the residence refunded the same amount. Another person brought back clothes, electronics, and items worth over KS 750,000, including a diamond nose pin and a pendant.
