In a major crackdown on the drug trade, the Ludhiana rural police have arrested a man on charges of drug peddling after recovering a massive haul of 900 kg of poppy husk from his residence. The accused, Avtar Singh alias Resham, is a resident of Jand Road in Latala, while his alleged aide, Baljit Singh alias Meeta from Sandhor village in Malerkotla, is still at large.
Navneet Singh Bains, the Ludhiana Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), revealed that the Jodhan Station House Officer (SHO), Inspector Heera Singh, received a tip-off about Avtar Singh’s involvement in drug trafficking. Acting on the information, the police raided the accused’s house and found the contraband stored in 45 bags.
During questioning, Avtar Singh allegedly confessed that he had procured the poppy husk with the help of his accomplice, Baljit Singh, who has been named as a co-accused in the case. A case under sections 15, 61, and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the duo.
It is worth noting that Avtar Singh is already facing trial in seven other cases related to drug and liquor smuggling, highlighting the gravity of the issue in the region. The police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the absconding aide, Baljit Singh, as the investigation into the case continues.
This crackdown on the drug trade underscores the authorities’ commitment to curbing the menace and keeping the community safe. The seizure of such a large quantity of poppy husk is a significant blow to the drug peddling network operating in the area, and the police are determined to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to bring the culprits to justice.
