The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court dismissed the anticipatory bail application filed by the actor Kasturi Shankar. The case is against her for her remarks about Telugu-speaking people in Tamil Nadu, and she filed an anticipatory bail plea.
The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court dismissed actor-TV presenter Kasturi Shankar’s anticipatory bail application. She had filed her bail plea in a case lodged against her for her objectionable remarks about the Telugu-speaking community in Tamil Nadu.
The bench reserved its orders on Tuesday while hearing her case. While that was happening, Justice Anand Venkatesh pointed out that Kasturi’s making such controversial remarks was unwarranted.
Justice Venkatesh of the High Court of Karnataka, speaking for himself and two other members, said the Telugu-speaking people were “very much part and parcel of the land” since it was Tamil Nadu, then known as Madras Presidency.
When the case came up for bail, Kasturi’s lawyer submitted that she had apologized for the remarks and that they were only meant to emphasize the hypocrisy of the ruling party, DMK.
Based on a complaint filed by a Telugu association, the Madurai police had registered a case against the actor. Afterwards, Kasturi went into hiding even as she filed for anticipatory bail.
She kicked off a storm in Tamil Nadu after she made some derogatory comments against the Telugu-speaking population of the state. She made those remarks on November 3 at an event called for “legal protection to Brahmins”.
Kasturi had herself claimed, with arrogance, that Telugu speakers were migrants to Tamil Nadu from outside the state “as attendants to the queen” who later, in her version, “acquired a Tamil identity” as she “straddled divisive politics”.
