The lawyer filed a complaint against Mamata Banerjee over alleged inflammatory remarks.
A lawyer has lodged a police complaint against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for certain remarks made at a TMC event.
The complainant, Supreme Court lawyer Vineet Jindal, referred to a statement where Banerjee said “if Bengal burns, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi will also burn.”
Jindal argued the remarks were provocative and intended to incite unrest. As CM, Banerjee’s words hold significance and could endanger national harmony, he said.
At the event, Banerjee condemned BJP’s 12-hour statewide bandh. She accused PM Narendra Modi of using the party to destabilize Bengal.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized Banerjee’s comments, saying she was spreading disunity. BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar too wrote to the Home Minister, terming the remarks “anti-national.”
The controversy stemmed from Banerjee’s condemnation of opposition politics in Bengal and her apparent message to not disturb the state’s peace. Critics allege she promoted divisive language unbefitting a CM. Police are looking into the matter.
