Mamata Banerjee pushes for capital punishment for rapists in 7 days

West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said its incumbent party, Trinamool Congress, will pass legislation on anti-rape laws to allow capital punishment for the accused.

The Chief Minister made this statement in view of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on 9th August.

We will bring a law on anti-rape that will ensure that the rapist is hanged within seven days of the crime, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.

Warning of a protest as well, the Chief Minister said, “Next week, we will call an Assembly session and pass the bill within 10 days.” We will send this bill to the Governor (CV Ananda Bose). If the latter does not pass it, we will sit in front of Raj Bhavan. We will make sure this bill is passed and the governor cannot escape responsibility this time.”

Delivering a speech on the occasion of TMCP Foundation Day in the city and along with her nephew, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata also claimed conspiracy by the BJP in the Kolkata doctor’s death case and said the BJP was trying to tarnish the image of West Bengal.

“The BJP is indulging in character assassination of Bengal and is doing nasty politics over the death of trainee doctor,” she claimed.

Addressing the 12-hour Bengal Bandh called by the BJP on Wednesday, the Chief Minister alleged that the saffron party was indulging in vandalism and its workers were indulging in violence on the police.

“The Trinamool Congress does not support bandhs in politics,” she said, adding the BJP had planned for it deliberately.

She also questioned, “Have the chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan resigned over crimes against women in their respective states?”?
