Man arrested for raping stray dog in Karnataka’s Ramanagara

In a shocking and gruesome incident, a man was caught red-handed while raping a stray dog in Karnataka’s Ramanagara district on Saturday. The locals witnessed the heinous act on Sathanur Road near Channapatna town and intervened, giving the accused a thrashing before handing him over to the police.

According to the police, the dog was tied up at the time of the incident and the accused was caught red-handed. The suspect was identified as Basava, and he has been taken into custody, though no formal case has been registered as those who handed him over refused to lodge a complaint. The police are interrogating the accused after initiating an investigation. The incident has also raised eyebrows among animal welfare advocates, forcing the police to think over filing a suo motu case in light of public outcry.

The police said this was not a one-off incident. More recently, a young man was booked in Chikkamagaluru district under charges of attempting to rape a stray dog in inebriation. The above case came into light following a viral video on social media after CCTV footage recorded his actions, prompting the intervention of the police.

In another incident of cruelty to animals, police in Shirva, Udupi district, arrested a man for dragging a dog tied to his scooter for over six kilometers. The public witnessed the entire scene, following which an animal welfare organization filed a complaint. Abdul Khader, the accused, was arrested while riding without a helmet. He has been booked under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for causing hurt to the animal and also under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

These incidents have increased concern regarding animal welfare in the region, with increasing demands to ensure stringent implementation of laws aimed at protecting animals.
