It is reported that in a strange occurrence, a married woman carried out wedding rituals with her brother at a community marriage function in Uttar Pradesh to get cash awards and gifts under the Chief Minister’s Mass Wedding Scheme. According to media reports, this incident happened in Lakshmipur block of Maharajganj district as part of a group wedding ceremony where 38 couples joined together in the presence of senior local administrators.
According to the news, intermediaries convinced the married woman and her brother to participate in the event, pretending to be the bride and groom to each other. On the wedding day, the woman placed a garland around her brother’s neck and also participated in other rituals, including circling the sacred fire seven times to solemnize the marriage. The false couple likewise accepted gift items from officials to mark the celebration.
The Block Development Officer (BDO) of Lakshmipur block, Amit Mishra, stated that an investigation has been ordered into the matter. He assured us that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible. He also mentioned that the scheme would not provide the false couple with financial help.
“The gift items given to the couple have been returned,” he added.
The Chief Minister’s Mass Wedding Scheme aims to benefit economically weaker sections in Uttar Pradesh. Under the program, the state government organizes wedding ceremonies of ladies from such families through an event. The marriage happens according to a woman’s social/religious beliefs, customs and traditions and financial aid is also offered.
As per the scheme, the Uttar Pradesh government spends ₹51,000 per couple. The bride receives ₹35,000 transferred to her bank account for happiness in her married life and setting up of a household. The remaining amount is utilized to organize the marriage event and provide gifts.
The scheme has been grabbing headlines due to instances of fraudulent activities. Recently, brides in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district allegedly placed garlands on themselves at a mass wedding ceremony under the program. Videos reportedly showing the incident went viral on social media.
