The Ministry of External Affairs attacked the Justin Trudeau government on Thursday for blocking an Australian media outlet from showing external affairs minister S Jaishankar and his Australian counterpart Penny Wong’s press interaction in Canberra. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the incident exposed Canada’s hypocrisy.
, We know this particular outlet’s social media handles and pages, which are an important diaspora outlet, have been blocked and unavailable for viewers in Canada. This happened just an hour or a few hours after this particular handle carried the press conference of EAM Dr S Jaishankar with Penny Wong.
We were surprised. It looks strange to us. But let me say these are actions that again expose Canada’s hypocrisy so far as freedom of speech is concerned,” he said during a press conference today.
During the press interaction, EAM Jaishankar mentioned that even political space was being given to anti-India elements in Canada. He went on to say that the Australia Today channel was blocked because the minister criticized Canada.
In his media engagements, you would have seen that EAM has spoken about three things. One was Canada making allegations, and a pattern has developed without evidence. The second was the issue of surveillance of Indian diplomats in Canada, which he called unacceptable. Third was the political space given in Canada to anti-India elements. ANI quoted him as saying, “So, you can draw your conclusion from that why the channel ‘Australia Today’ was blocked by Canada.
