The apex body representing the Meitei community in Jiribam district, Manipur, has leveled serious allegations against a local MLA, accusing him of supplying weapons to miscreants. As of now, there has been no response from the legislator, and efforts to obtain his comments regarding the accusations have been unsuccessful.
In a statement, the Jiri Apunba Lup organization claimed, “The MLA organized numerous meetings to support miscreants with financial assistance, weaponry, and accessories. However, the Muslim community seeks to live peacefully alongside the Meiteis, which has thwarted his plans.”
The ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups has resulted in over 250 fatalities and left thousands homeless since May 2023. In response to the escalating situation, the central government imposed President’s rule in the state on February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The state assembly, which is set to serve until 2027, has been placed under suspended animation.
