Former Indian National Congress official and the incumbent MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) of Naoboicha constituency in Lakhimpur from Assam, Bharat Chandra Narah resigned. This decision is after his wife lost out on a ticket that would have given her a chance to contest during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Cong now has nominated Uday Shankar Hazarika as its pick for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat, and Sadhvi Narah latter was drenched in sorrow and anger after the event. He thought of running for election but aspired that his wife, Raima Narah, a former Union Minister, would be elected to this position.
In a short letter sent to the INC president, Mallikarjun Kharge, Narah wrote,
“Effective right now, I quit the Indian National Congress.”
Before his resignation, he had also left his post as the Assam Congress media cell chairman.
But, Barrow, who has been a sitting MLA for five consecutive terms in 2016 and 2021 from Dhoengkhong and Naboicha, respectively, succeeded in his sixth term from Naboicha in 2021. Before switching to the India National Congress, he was attached to the Assam People’s Party or its subsidiary. His political career contains the reach of posts such as minister in AGP and Congress governments. He was also the media advisor to the former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, which allowed him to have closer ties with the people of Assam.
Ranee Narah, the former President’s wife, is a famous political face. The latter herself has served three terms in parliament as an elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Lakhimpur and also has experience working in the Rajya Sabha. Hazarika recently left the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and is of Congress. She was regarded as one of the most probable candidates for the Lakhimpur mandate alongside Narah.
However, after intense competition, the Congress party designated Uday Shankar Hazarika as their candidate for the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat. Hazarika receives favors from the Head of state Congress party Bhupen Kumar Borah. The forthcoming campaign election between Hazarika and Baruah in Lakhimpur will see Baruah seeking his third successive term in the constituency while Hazarika challenges him as a BJP candidate.
As the Lok Sabha elections approach, the political front is seen racing against time to grab more seats and influence the overall political landscape in Assam. The resignation of Bharat Chandra Narah from the India Congress Instigation has strengthened the political momentum in Lakhimpur, where the electoral situation already seems complicated.
