Modi critiques Rahul Gandhi on caste reservations

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday for the remarks of caste and India’s reservation system, which Rahul Gandhi made in an event held recently in the United States of America. Addressing a rally in Kurukshetra in Haryana state, Modi said that the Gandhi family has always been anti-reservation and has shown disrespect to the OBCs, Dalits, and Tribals.

In his speech, Modi paraphrased Jawaharlal Nehru, stating that Gandhi’s great grandfather stated that service delivery in governments would reduce with reservations. He went out of his way to preserve the quotas set by B. R. Ambedkar; he said with great determination, “I swear to it with my life, while I hold this office, not a single cent of that quota will be stolen or eroded. ”

Continuing his tirade against the Gandhi family, Modi said the two had vowed to end the quota for the socially deprived sections if voted back to power. He had labeled congress politics as one that propounds falsehoods and disinformation.

These remarks came after Gandhi said at Georgetown University when asked about the Congress party’s position on reservations, that it would change its stand only when India is made a ‘fair place. ’ Gandhi also observed the need for a caste census to ascertain the ‘undesirable’ socio-economic status of some lower castes.

The political temperature in Haryana is rising, and now the state is heading towards the assembly elections on October 5.
