Modi’s Ukraine diplomacy: Engaging Putin, Biden amid conflict

For India, amidst the Russia—Ukraine conflict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has busily churned out diplomacy and met top leaders.

Within a week of his Kyiv sojourn, which witnessed Modi holding a tête-à-tête with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Indian Prime Minister held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. The two spoke about the works in progress, with Modi explaining the situation after he recently visited Ukraine.

“Spoke about ways to deepen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership,” the PM said in the microblog on the social media website Twitter after the call with Putin, referring to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and my recent visit to Ukraine.

The Prime Minister’s communication with the Kremlin follows a phone conversation with the president of the United States of America, Joe Biden, who appreciated Modi’s message of peace and humane gestures towards Ukraine. This delicate diplomacy does not hide India’s attempts to remain impartial but, at the same time, calls for negotiations to resolve the crisis that has been ongoing for the third year.

The experts considered Mr. Modi’s visit to Ukraine, the first visit of the Indian Prime Minister to the country, an effort to seek a much bigger role in finding a solution for the conflict that has cost nearly 100,000 soldiers on the two sides. During the visit, Modi assured the international powers of his country’s willingness to ‘step up to the plate’ and contribute to the process of trying to bring about peace in the area.

Prime Minister Modi’s meetings with Zelenskyy and Putin have become notable, especially the move between two different groups. To further fuel his bromance, in July, Modi went to Russia to meet his “param dost” Putin, and the move was not liked by the West.

Speaking of India’s position in the current international environment, Modi’s diplomacy is intended to bring the parties to the negotiating table and seek a possibility to stop the devastating war that has negative impacts on the entire world.
