Monsoon arrives in Kerala, IMD issues Orange alert in multiple districts

The Indian Meteorological Department finally declared that the southwest monsoon has begun over Kerala and progressed to most parts of northeastern areas on Thursday.

On May 15, the weather office predicts that the monsoon should arrive in Kerala by May 31.

The senior weather scientists explained that Cyclone Rema, which swept through West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday, has dragged the monsoonal flow to the Bay of Bengal, which most likely could be the reason for the early arrival of monsoons in the northeast.

On the same note, the IMD fine-tuned the rain predictions and issued an orange alert in seven districts of the state on Wednesday as downpours intensified in the state, thus causing water logging in the major cities, including Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital.

Due to heavy rain, an alert was issued in seven districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki.

Monsoon rains hit Kerala in the last few days, and as per the records available in the weather office, the state has received more rainfall in May.

The crops sown during this time depend on the rainfall received during June and July, as those are the first two months of the monsoon season that are beneficial for agriculture.
