Mumbai battered by monsoon rains, transport chaos ensues

Mumbai, the financial capital of India, has been witnessing the consequences of an immense amount of rain continuously showering the city, which has severely disturbed its regular transport system.

One of the biggest operational issues at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport was heavy rains and low visibility. The runway was temporarily shut down for over an hour early Monday morning. This led to the rerouting of 27 flights, and by 11 am, 51 flights to and from Mumbai were axed.

This was done while canceling 42 IndiGo, 6 Air India, 2 Air India Express, and one Qatar Airways flight. The passengers bore the interruption, especially as some flights had to be redirected to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, or Indore.

The airport authorities have asked everyone to verify their flights and reach the airport early, as the roads are waterlogged due to the change in weather.

It may also be recalled that the local train service has also been affected by reports of waterlogged railway tracks due to the heavy showers. Schools and colleges are closed following the calamity that struck the city due to the heavy rain.

The authorities are trying to bring the situation back to normal; however, it appears that passengers of the local transportation in Mumbai are still suffering from the aftermath of extreme weather conditions. This should teach a lesson on the need for strong works and infrastructure to bear such a climate.
