Mumbai police arrest Saif Ali Khan’s attacker after investigation

Several dentitions and confusion over arrest preceded the final apprehension of the man who stabbed actor Saif Ali Khan from Thane in the early hours of Sunday.

The accused, Shariful Islam, was finally arrested from Thane after over 70 hours of extensive manhunt by multiple teams of the Mumbai Police.

However, other people were arrested earlier for interrogations, some of whom were also said to be the accused in the case. However, later, it was known that the arrested persons were not the culprits. The police studied several CCTV footage to trace the main accused, including at the actor’s residence and train stations.

The police arrested a person and brought him to the Bandra Police Station a day after Saif Ali Khan was attacked. He was, however, released as the police found that he had no connection with the case. Reports said he was detained because he resembled the accused captured on the CCTV footage of Saif’s building.

On Saturday, a 31-year-old man, Aakash Kanojia, was detained from a train in Chhattisgarh’s Durg in connection with the attack case. The police had earlier stated that he was a suspect and not an accused. The RPF says that the man was traveling in the Jnaneswari Express.

At 12.24 pm, an RPF personnel at the Durg railway station received a tip-off from the Juhu police station that the suspect was traveling in the train.

The suspect was found sitting in the general coach when the train arrived. His photo was sent to the Mumbai Police, confirming him as a suspect. The police said he had a criminal record and similar features to the individual caught in the CCTV footage in Saif’s building.
