Nationwide protests erupt over Kolkata doctor’s murder

There are social issues that have triggered riots all over the country: The most recent happened when a trainee doctor was raped and killed in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. When asked about the incident, President Droupadi Murmu said it was horrible and deplorable to commit such a heinous act against women. “No civilized society can continue to sit back and watch daughters and sisters suffer like this,” this part she said, making a spirited call for change.

Naturally, the President asked society to rethink their attitude towards women, which seems to treat them as subhuman. “It is our duty to ensure that the barriers are lifted off the path for our daughters,” she noted.

Recently in an interaction session with school children, Murmu was reminded of their query to prevent future occurrences of Nirbhaya-like incidents of gang rape that speak volumes about the safety issues even today.

Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, responded by condemning the West Bengal government and termed its action shameful to democracy. He was particularly critical of the government’s inability to protect women in the state.

In response, Congress leader Pawan Khera demanded the President look into the increase in crimes against women in the country and that all states and the center need to be answerable to the people. The collective anger is indicative of the increasing imperative of the need to take sterner steps to protect women in Indian society.
