The Rajya Sabha deputy chairman ruled that the impeachment notice against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar was an impropriety, severely flawed, and drawn in haste to mar his reputation.
Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh dismissed the no-confidence motion submitted by the opposition on Thursday against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. He termed it an act of impropriety, being severely flawed and drawn in haste to mar his reputation.
In his ruling, tabled in the House by Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Moody, Harivansh said the impeachment notice against Dhankhar aimed to damage the country’s constitutional institution and “deserves to be and is hereby dismissed.” At least 60 opposition members signed the notice on December 10, alleging that they did not trust him and that he was “biased.”
The deputy chairman ruled this “personally targeted” notice had the gravity of bereftness of facts and was designed merely to secure publicity. The deputy chairman held that the whole thing was a “misadventure” where deliberate trivializing and demeaning of the very high constitutional office of the Vice President of the largest democracy was deliberate.
That’s very worrisome, particularly for the dignity of Parliament and its members,” he said, suggesting that the notice is chock-full of assertions intended to malign the incumbent Vice President. He was entrusted with dealing with the notice after Dhankhar recused himself.
After the no-confidence motion against Dhankhar was rejected, Congress general secretary in charge Jairam Ramesh alleged Harivansh was taking “liberties with facts” in his verdict regarding a press conference he addressed on December 12.
“The ruling given by the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha today on the motion of no confidence in the Chairman submitted by INDIA parties contains a reference to some remarks made by me in a press conference held on December 12, 2024. This reference takes liberties with facts – to put it mildly,\” he said in a post on X.
