Nursing trainee allegedly raped by auto driver in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra

A more recent and shocking case was committed by an auto-rickshaw driver in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district who allegedly raped a 19-year-old nursing trainee. Going by the preliminary reports, the girl had hired an auto-rickshaw to be taken home when the driver asked her to take some water, which he poisoned, following which the teenager fainted.

In the next scene, the driver is accused of having taken the unconscious woman to a deserted place and raping her. When she woke up, she reported the matter to her family and then went and reported the case to the police.

An FIR was lodged, and the police are now searching the CCTV footage in a bid to look for the accused. The victim is currently admitted to a state-run hospital, and he is said to be improving.

This case has angered many people in the region, and they protested toward the end of last night when they blocked the road in order to force authorities to act and bring the perpetrators to book.

The Ratnagiri incident was followed by the partial outrage that trailed the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Otherwise, a city civic volunteer was arrested named Sanjoy Roy, and after an order given by the Calcutta High Court, the investigation was handed over to CBI.

Maharashtra has also had another recent incident where, in a school at Badlapur, two minor girls were sexually assaulted. The police have detained an attendant of the school in connection to the alleged abuse.

Such bitter incidents have again drawn attention toward the grim necessity to enhance security measures for women and girls in the country.
