It is the first instance of a bowler taking 200 wickets in the World Test Championship in the history of cricket. The Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins created history on Sunday, January 5.
The 31-year-old pacer, who led the Aussies to the WTC title win in 2023 by getting the better of India in the final played at The Oval, achieved the feat by dismissing Washington Sundar during India’s second innings of the ongoing fifth Test at Sydney Cricket Ground.
Sundar, who played his first Test for India in January 2021, could score only 12 runs off 43 balls. He was clean bowled by Cummins on the fourth ball of the 39th over.
Cummins, Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the ongoing five-match Test series against India, has 73 wickets in 17 matches played in the 2023-25 edition of WTC. In the list of bowlers with the most wickets in a single edition of WTC, Cummins sits at No. 3 position.
Lyon (88 wickets in 2021-2023) and Jasprit Bumrah (77 wickets in 2023-25) are the only two players who have managed to take more wickets in one edition of WTC than him.
Cummins took the wickets of two Indian batsmen—Washington Sundar and Jasprit Bumrah—in the first innings. In India’s second innings, he opened his wicket account on Saturday by dismissing Rishabh Pant. Pant, who hammered 61 runs from 33 balls with the help of six fours and four sixes, was caught behind by Alex Carey on the second ball of the 23rd over.
Sunday morning saw the Australian Test captain give his side the perfect start by sending Ravindra Jadeja back, caught behind off Carey for 13 runs from 45 balls in the second over of the day.
