PM Modi stresses the need for severe punishment to deter crimes against women

Women’s Safety Takes Center Stage: PM Modi‘s Call for Swift Justice Amid Nationwide Outrage.

In the backdrop of massive protests across the nation over the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day address to underscore the urgency of ensuring women’s safety and delivering swift justice to restore public trust.

Addressing the nation from the iconic Red Fort, PM Modi’s remarks carried a solemn tone as he expressed his anguish over the atrocities against women that have ignited widespread outrage across the country.

As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against women that are happening – there is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage,” he stated, acknowledging the collective anguish and indignation gripping the nation.

The Prime Minister’s call for action came in the wake of the brutal assault and subsequent death of a 31-year-old woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an incident that has sparked widespread protests and demands for justice.

Stressing the need for swift investigations and stringent punishments, PM Modi emphasized, “Speedy investigation of crimes against women, those executing these monstrous deeds be awarded strict punishment at the earliest – this is important to instill confidence in society.”

He further highlighted the importance of public discourse surrounding the punishment meted out to perpetrators, stating, “It is the need of the hour, that extensive discussion on those receiving punishment be held so that those committing this sin understand that this leads to hanging. I think it is essential to instill this fear.”

PM Modi’s remarks resonated with the widespread anger and frustration that has been simmering across the nation, particularly in West Bengal, where thousands of women from diverse backgrounds gathered at midnight vigils, demanding justice for the victim.

The ‘Reclaim the Night’ protests saw an outpouring of grief and solidarity, with women taking to the streets to voice their outrage over the heinous crime.

However, the peaceful protests were marred by incidents of vandalism, with unidentified miscreants entering the premises of the RG Kar Medical College Hospital and causing damage to the medical facility.

Adding to the mounting pressure for justice, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced plans to launch a protest, demanding that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the probe from the Kolkata Police, “ensure justice within next Sunday.”

As the nation grapples with the grim reality of violence against women, PM Modi’s Independence Day address has served as a clarion call for swift action, highlighting the urgent need for societal introspection, systemic reforms, and a collective commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of women across the country.
