PM Modi grieves Air India crash in Ahmedabad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, describing the tragedy as “heartbreaking beyond words.”

In a statement posted on X, Modi shared his shock and sadness, saying, “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.” He mentioned that he has been in contact with ministers and authorities who are actively assisting those impacted by the incident.

The London-bound flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew members, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon. Reports indicate that many casualties are feared.

Disturbing footage captured the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI171) rapidly losing altitude before crashing in a residential area, resulting in a massive fireball and thick black smoke rising into the sky. The crash occurred around 2 PM in the Meghaninagar area, leading to a temporary suspension of airport operations.

Among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, and one Canadian. Many injured individuals were transported to a nearby civil hospital for treatment.

Air India chairperson N Chandrasekaran announced that an emergency center has been activated to support families seeking information. He expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event. Our primary focus is on supporting all affected individuals and their families.”

Chandrasekaran assured that efforts are underway to assist emergency response teams at the crash site and to provide necessary support to those impacted, promising further updates as more information becomes available.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu emphasized that agencies are on “highest alert.” He conveyed his shock and devastation over the crash, stating, “I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilized, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families.”
