PM Modi: India emerges as a major maritime -power

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted the rise in stature of India as a major maritime power and emphasized that the country is a trustworthy and responsible global partner. This came after he commissioned three indigenously produced naval warships, which marked a milestone in the country’s defense capabilities.

During the commissioning, Modi underlined India’s Indo-Pacific vision for a free, open, safe, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. The simultaneous commissioning of a destroyer, frigate, and submarine testified to the success story of the ‘Made in India’ aspiration.

“This initiative has fostered strength and self-reliance in the country,” he said, while calling for India to make a global role for itself in securing the maritime spaces against drugs, weapons and terrorism. The Prime Minister Modi pointed out that the India was increasingly being seen as a major player in maritime security.

India has been positioning itself as a “first responder” to every challenge in the Indian Ocean, with Modi adding that India is poised to play a “leading role in shaping global security, economic patterns, and geopolitical balances.” He repeated calls to protect territorial waters, ensure freedom of navigation, and secure vital trade routes.

Emphasizing upon the spirit of development and not expansionism, Modi said the Indian Navy has inducted 33 ships and seven submarines in the last decade. He also lauded the fact that for the first time, India’s defense production had crossed Rs 1.25 lakh crore with the country exporting defense equipment to more than 100 countries.

The commissioning was attended by Modi earlier in the day, as the Indian Navy welcomed INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer at the Naval Dockyard.

INS Nilgiri, the lead ship of the stealth frigate class under Project 17A, forms a considerable fillip over the preceding Shivalik-class frigates. Designed by the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy and built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, it is fully loaded with advanced features to improve survivability, seakeeping, and stealth.

INS Surat thus constitutes a part of the Project 15B class of stealth destroyers, which comes after the Kolkata class and is expected to be an improvement in design and capability. Likewise, INS Vaghsheer, the sixth submarine of the Scorpene-class Project 75, is a multi-role diesel-electric submarine designed for anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. These mark the beginning of a new era in India’s naval capabilities and its commitment to ensuring maritime security in the region.
