New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate six new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) across India this week, spanning locations from Jammu and Kashmir to Uttar Pradesh.
On Tuesday, PM Modi will dedicate the new AIIMS in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir to the nation at an event in Jammu. This will be followed by the inauguration of five other AIIMS in Rajkot (Gujarat), Mangalagiri (Andhra Pradesh), Bathinda (Punjab), Rae Bareli (UP), and Kalyani (West Bengal) on February 25 at an event in Rajkot.
The AIIMS Jammu, constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana scheme, has been set up at a cost of over ₹1,660 crore across 227 acres. It houses extensive facilities, including 720 beds, a 125-seat medical college, a 60-seat nursing college, a 30-bed AYUSH block, hostels, a guest house, a shopping complex, and more.
PM Modi will also be inaugurating new medical and nursing colleges across India, in addition to laying the foundations for upcoming health facilities under the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission. This includes critical care blocks and integrated public health laboratories.
Advanced research centres of the ICMR and projects under the National Health Mission (NHM) will also be dedicated to the nation.
To boost food safety for the general public, the Prime Minister will be launching advanced food testing infrastructure in multiple states.
According to officials, these healthcare projects worth ₹11,391 crore will usher in major advancements in India’s medical landscape. They will facilitate quality, affordable and accessible healthcare for all citizens, while also expanding medical education opportunities in the country.
The new medical and nursing institutes aim to nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals required for a healthy nation. The healthcare capacity enhancements are expected to put India on the road to a fitter, happier, and more prosperous future.
Compared to the UPA regime, the health budget under NDA rule has witnessed an exponential rise – from ₹37,330 crore in 2013-14 to a projected ₹90,658 crore in 2024-25, marking a 143% increase.
